What is CBD? A beginner’s guide for South Africans
A plain-language introduction to cannabidiol (CBD) — what it is, how it differs from THC, and how it fits into the South African regulatory framework.
Cannabidiol — CBD — is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found naturally in the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not intoxicating at the doses available in consumer-grade products. In practical terms: it will not make you feel high, and it will not show up on a standard THC drug test as long as the product genuinely stays within the legal trace limits.
CBD is sold in South Africa as a consumer health product under the Section 22A(9) low-dose exclusion of the Medicines and Related Substances Act. That carve-out permits CBD supplements up to a specific daily dose without requiring a prescription or SAHPRA registration, as long as the THC content is below the defined trace. Any product above that threshold is treated as a scheduled medicine (S4 or S6) and requires the Section 21 pathway — a different legal path we cover separately in our Section 21 guide.
How does it work?
CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a network of receptors (CB1, CB2) and signalling molecules involved in sleep, mood, pain perception, immune function and more. Where THC binds directly to CB1 receptors (hence the psychoactive effect), CBD modulates the system indirectly and has a measurably different pharmacological profile.
Common reasons people use CBD
- Occasional sleep support
- Everyday calm / mild anxiety
- Post-exercise muscle recovery
- General wellness supplementation
Note: none of these are medical claims. CBD is a supplement under the consumer-product exclusion, not a registered medicine. If you have a diagnosed condition, speak with a healthcare professional rather than self-medicating.
How to start
Most new users start with a full-spectrum CBD oil at 5–10 mg per serving, once or twice daily, and adjust after a week or two of consistent use. A 30 ml bottle of 500 mg oil delivers roughly 8 mg per 0.5 ml dropper — a convenient starting point. Use our CBD dosage calculator for a personalised starting dose based on your body weight and goals.
What to look for when buying
- Lab reports (COA) — every legitimate CBD product has a Certificate of Analysis showing cannabinoid profile and contaminant testing.
- Source — hemp-derived CBD grown in SA or imported under permit is traceable; unverified grey-market CBD is not.
- THC content — must stay below the legal trace; genuine products disclose this on the label.
- Full-spectrum vs isolate — full-spectrum includes the broader cannabinoid profile (often more effective per mg); isolate is pure CBD.
